Your Donations Keep Us Sailing!
The Nathan Foundation,
here represented by Ed Nabb at left,
sponsors the Nathan's free sails
at Cambridge special events.
Wooden boats like Nathan require increasing amounts of maintenance each year. Even as the youngest boat in the skipjack fleet, she still requires constant and expensive work to keep her in top sailing condition.
Rising costs, increasing needs.
Operating and maintenance costs continue to escalate. Maintenance needs increase as the Nathan puts more sailing years behind her. Maintaining the Nathan in top operating condition, and meeting increasingly stringent Coast Guard requirements for passenger carrying vessels is vital to continuing her mission of carrying passengers safely for the years to come. As with all boats, especially wooden ones, repair expenses can be high. For example, we want to strip and redo the deck this summer then rebuild the main cabin if we can find the funds. We have a lot of other woodwork that needs to be done. Past repairs have been paid for through surplus operating funds and small donations. But the repairs ahead and the need to cover their large expenses including replacing sails, rigging, hydraulics, and cabin, as well as deck and hull preventive maintenance are more costly.
Your donations go to the boat.
Our volunteers work diligently to keep our boat in excellent condition and they keep our operating expenses as low as possible. It is a labor of love by the volunteers who preserve the Nathan and who sail her offering maritime heritage experiences to visitors and the community. When you donate, not only does it go towards a good cause, but there are incentives. $10 gets you a nice magnet you can put on your car to show you support the Nathan. If you go big, and for donations of $1,000 or more, you get a sunset cruise on the Nathan on the Choptank River!
