Volunteers Needed
February 16, 2022Skipjack Nathan Outdoors Delmarva
April 22, 2024Our 2023 sailing season kicks off when crew and volunteers rig the Nathan Saturday morning March 25th. During April we will be reacquainting returning volunteers and starting to train new volunteers to sail the Nathan.
Sail training is extensive. In each two-hour training session, we all learn to tie knots “the Nathan way”. Everyone learns teamwork to shake out the main sail and lace/unlace the jib. We learn how to raise and lower the main sail and jib, haul lines and trim the sheets. Working under command of one of our experienced captains, we practice maneuvers and learn to sail Nathan in every weather condition. First aid and CPR training as well as emergency drills and man overboard procedures keep both crew and passengers safe.
Our docents learn passenger care and stories about local maritime history. Admin volunteers learn to arrange for charters or to assist passengers with booking trips. The passenger carrying season starts in early May and continues until the end of October. During the season, Nathan leaves the dock about 80 times each season, mostly for two-hour sails but we also make several long trips during the season. There are many opportunities for volunteers to sail on the Nathan of Dorchester during the season.
Come join us as a volunteer.
